![]() How much English is spoken in this area of France? Language: My high school French is embarrassingly bad. Couchsurfing: is this at all a done thing in the Dordogne / France? I am travelling solo for my trip, as I have not managed to convince anyone else to take the time off work to join me, and having couchsurfed a lot in the past I find it is a great way to meet locals. Does anyone have any experience driving an electric car in France, and in the Dordogne in particular - is there an app I should download, and anything I should do in advance of my trip, or anything I should think about in advance? I have looked online and it seems like there are a lot of electric car charging stations in the Dordogne, but I could not find a 'guide' to how they worked (I have never driven an electric car before). ![]() Electric car hire: I have hired an electric car from Bordeaux. I am less interested in visiting the big towns, though I do plan to see Sarlat, Rocamadour and Periguex. Should I base myself in one place, and do day trips, or should I move from place to place? Is there any stand-out activity I should do, or place I should visit, that I haven't put on my itinerary? I am really interested in kayaking, visiting vineyards, beautiful villages, and some of the prehistoric sites / chateaux, but there are so many to visit I do not know what to prioritise. What I do not know is where I should focus my time. I was thinking of beginning with Perigueux in the north first, with day trips to Brantome and Bourdeilles, before heading east then south and meandering along the Dordogne and Vezere river valleys and visiting some of the prehistoric sites around Lascaux. Places to visit: I have prepared a really rough itinerary to mostly visit the southern parts of Dordogne as well as the area which I think is technically in Lot (around Rocamadour). Here are a couple of questions I hope will help me plan my trip: I have just booked a car for 15 days from Bordeaux starting 28/09 and I am looking for some advice on the trips from locals or people who are familiar from the area. I am a New Zealander (30M) looking to visit the Dordogne region in late September- early October.

It has technical drawing functionality with virtual callipers, it has curve smoothing for spontaneous drawing (which is actually good), but it also has “imposition” features for printing layouts which fall short when compared to InDesign or QuarkXpress.įinally, the apps in the Suite are buggy and have a tendency to crash or hang.Select A Formation Package. For example, you can use CorelDRAW as a diagram app, but it can’t compete with dedicated apps like MindManager for Mac. The app is also trying to be too many things to too many users. The thing is that they are implemented in ways that don’t make good use of the macOS’s interface options, built-in support for gestures, shortcuts, etc. ![]() I did notice CorelDRAW uses all four cores, but it doesn’t seem to make the most of the GPU in that machine.ĬorelDRAW 2019 does have a number of features that you will not find in other vector art applications. The spellchecker and “Grammatik” needed several seconds before they realised there wasn’t any text in the box to check at all.īy the way, all of these things were done on a three-month-old iMac 5K with 40GB of RAM and 4GB of VRAM. This sluggishness was even worse in layout mode where it took a second or three before the text box outline would follow my mouse. Just as with several other features, PowerTRACE was sluggish at picking up mouse movements. PowerTRACE art can be ungrouped but the app deleted the traced image whenever I tried to select one of the ungrouped vector areas. It’s clearly a port from Windows and in some areas, it’s quite clumsy – often, you need to make an extra trip to an icon where you could be using a modifier key to switch between effects. PowerTRACE did a fine job, but the interface – all of the Suite, to be honest – doesn’t feel like it’s living in the macOS Mojave era. That lets you trace bitmap images and convert them to vector art. I started by trying its PowerTRACE feature. It’s a vector drawing app, a layout app and a photo tracing app (PowerTRACE). There’s also a licensing option for large organisations.įont Manager is a nice font manager, but it’s up against some hefty competition. The CorelDRAW Suite can be licensed in two ways: subscription-based or perpetual. Corel has waited a bit too long and hasn’t fit out the Corel apps with a streamlined enough interface for that to happen, in my opinion.ĬorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019 combines three apps: CorelDRAW, Corel Photo-Paint and Font Manager. The Mac version is a successful port in terms of feature set, but it probably won’t dethrone Adobe apps, nor kill the Affinity Photo and Designer apps. In spite of the considerable increase in the tail water level downstream the FPS, there was no significant differences of the dissipated energy with and without the FPS for the whole system, in which the energy dissipation ranged from 14.05 to 55.91% with the FPS and ranged from 13.57 to 55.09% without it.Click on “Download PDF” for the PDF version or on the title for the HTML version. This convergence of the jump lowered the head losses of the flow before the jump and then increased Froude Number, Fr, and produced higher y2/y1 value. ![]() ![]() The results show that the additional friction resistance by the FPS increased the tail water level and forced the hydraulic jump towards the sluice gate, in which the FPS produced a converging distance ranged from 0.64m to 5.34m. In each test, the hydraulic jump formed downstream the sluice gate and the FPS once placed downstream the jump and once removed, in the same test, with maintaining the same flow conditions, and measurements are taken to investigate the effect of the FPS on the jump. The system operated with flow rates ranged from 11.11 to 36.24l/s with different gate openings in 27 tests. The system (which consists of a sluice gate, FPS, and rising weir) installed in a horizontal flume of 0.3m width, 0.45m depth, and 15m length. The downstream face made with an inclination of 45o to prevent the free fall of the water. This combination of the pipes and bars made a width of 29.6cm and height of 42.6cm to fit, approximately, the flume cross sectional area dimensions. The FPS with a vertical front face consisting of 16Ã-11, rows Ã- columns, of pipes extended 10cm downstream and held by a 0.5cm, thickness, iron bars and welded together to prevent any egression of the pipes from the FPS. The FPS shaped as a sectioned triangular prism consists of sets of 2.6cmÃ-2.6cm iron square-section pipes formed with direction of the flow. In this research, a flow partitioning structure, FPS, designed, carried out, and installed downstream a sluice gate to apportion the cross sectional area of the flow and, then, increase the resistance of the friction force by increasing the walls of flow. One of the ways of moving the jump into a closer distance from the outlets is to raise the tail water level. The location of the jump downstream the hydraulic structures outlets is an important parameter taken into considerations within the construction of the downstream protection works. Porpoises are relatively shy and are seen alone or in groups containing a few individuals. Dolphins coordinate hunts and communicate for other reasons by combining whistles, clicks, and ultrasonic sounds. Where food is abundant, "superpods" exceeding 1,000 dolphins have been observed. Social Behavior of Dolphins and Porpoisesĭolphins tend to live in pods, or groups, of up to a dozen individuals. Gestation periods are very similar, between 7 and 12 months, with 1-2 calves born, though most often only one. Pair bonding is more frequently observed in dolphins, often for life. Mating seasons for both species tend to be short, with dominant males having multiple mates. Males of both species have two genital openings on their ventral side, while females have four: two for their sex organs and two for lactation, with teats found inside the body. Vocalizations are more extensive and frequent with dolphins, and can travel longer distances than those recorded for porpoises. Neither dolphins nor porpoises rely much on their sense of smell. The flippers on dolphins and porpoises contain finger-like digits. Scientists theorize that these bones come from dolphins' and porpoises' land-dwelling ancestors some 50 million years ago. These fins actually contain the same number of bones as a human arm and end in five digits that are structured similarly to fingers. Of the three types of fins found on dolphins and porpoises, only the pectoral fins (flippers), which are used for stopping and steering underwater, contain bones. Dolphins and porpoises even have hair, but nearly all of it is lost shortly after birth. And, like almost all mammals, they give live birth to their young and nurse their offspring. On average, porpoises, which are more darkly-colored than dolphins, are between 5 and 8 feet long.īoth species breathe air from blowholes at the top of their head. The orca, or killer "whale," which is actually a dolphin, genetically, can be up to 35 feet long, for example, and the Hector's dolphin of New Zealand is sometimes smaller than 4 feet. Dolphins usually have a “beak” that makes them appear "long-nosed," while porpoises do not have a beak and thus appear more "flat-faced." The dorsal fins on dolphins are usually curved or hooked, while those on porpoises are more triangular in shape. ![]() Footlight Parade marked Warner’s third 1933 backstage foray (after 42nd Street and Gold Diggers of 1933), and though it contains a few fresh elements, the tale of a feisty impresario (Cagney) who must battle embezzlers and an in-house spy who leaks all his ideas to a theatrical rival possesses a formulaic feel. ![]() Unfortunately, the movie’s weak storyline puts a damper on his coming out party. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy, Cagney shows off his fleet feet here. A veteran of vaudeville and Broadway musicals, the pint-sized dynamo could dance up a storm, and almost a decade before he wowed audiences and won a Best Actor Oscar as George M. He also surprised his fans – who heretofore only knew him as an on-screen tough guy – by unveiling his considerable toe-tapping talent. Already a major star thanks to his electrifying performance in the pre-Code gangster flick The Public Enemy, Cagney lends the proceedings a much-needed jolt with his patented pugnacity and boundless energy. Though Berkeley is also famous for directing almost all of the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland backyard musicals later in his career, he made his mark and cemented his reputation with a handful of Warner extravaganzas in the early 1930s.įootlight Parade is one of his most lavish concoctions, and the addition of the charismatic James Cagney to the Warner musical stock company led by hoofer Ruby Keeler and crooner Dick Powell further buoys the film. In the blink of an eye, a static, dull genre became an art form, and the renaissance would last a generation. Berkeley took the camera where it never had gone before, lifting it up and away to a bird’s-eye perch, and thanks to a bevy of contorting chorus girls down below, fashioned an array of eye-popping fantasies that captivated Depression-era audiences desperate for escape. Bacon.) His creations elevate not just this movie, but the entire musical genre, which was all but dead before the brazen Berkeley put his personal stamp on it and resuscitated the form. Without Berkeley’s awe-inspiring handiwork, Footlight Parade would be just another stale, dime-a-dozen backstage musical. He also directed them in Footlight Parade, and because they grab all the attention, he gets the credit for the whole film. That’s not entirely incorrect, because Berkeley, a former Broadway choreographer who revolutionized the movie musical by devising ingenious kaleidoscopic set-pieces that transformed chorus lines into geometric shapes and patterns, conceived the musical sequences in both films. The journeyman director helmed a couple of groundbreaking Hollywood musicals ( 42nd Street and Footlight Parade) in the early 1930s, but ask even serious classic film buffs who directed those pictures and they’ll likely say Busby Berkeley. She describes The Substitute as “wildly successful” for communicating something both intellectually imperative but also triggering emotion, “which I think is what makes it resonate with anyone who comes in and watches it.” After seeing it herself, she realized that “it was one particular piece that everyone would talk about with everyone.” “Ultimately what we saw in the exhibition was just incredibly moving,” says Cooper Hewitt curator Andrea Lipps. ![]() She urges caution in these kinds of projects and illustrates her concerns with artworks that point to troubling outcomes. Within the work’s two-minute time frame, “there’s a moment of affection and tenderness for this thing coming to life before you,” Ginsberg says. The Substitute reflects this uneasy paradox. When it comes to killing something as extraordinary as northern white rhinos for their horns, we’re all implicated in this, even if we feel very distant.” Ginsberg also wonders what errors in reproduction may arise as humans recreate life artificially. “The idea that we could be able to control an A.I. And yet we completely neglect the life that already exists,” says Ginsberg. “I just was really struck by this paradox that somehow we were getting so excited about the possibility of creating intelligence in whatever form. The last male northern white rhino, Sudan, died in 2018, and the two surviving females are too old to reproduce.
